It is fairly common to use combined inhibitors in protecting water circulation loops at petrochemical and other plants as well as boiler equipment in factory power stations; these are mixtures of several inhibitors dissolved in water or alcohol. These combined inhibitors as a rule include secondary products from chemical processes that show inhibitor action together with synergetic additives that increase the protection, which substantially reduces the cost. These production wastes perform two functions: inhibitor and solvent. In these combined inhibitors, the concentration of each component is lower than that when they are used individually, which reduces the residual concentrations of the inhibitors in the discharge water and correspondingly does not violate ecological standards. When combined inhibitors have been used at the DneproAZOT Company, it has frequently been observed that their performance is dependent on the time of contact between steel and the inhibited medium. Studies have therefore been made on the inhibition performance for mild steel with various contact times in order to determine the best time for these combined inhibitors (ones based on tripolyphosphates and phosphoric acid) in order to attain the maximum protection.
