The strength of arterial pipelines is analyzed in accordance with the method of limiting state, which is determined by the rupture strength of pipes due to internal static pressure, and is regulated by Construction Rule and Regulation 2.0506-85. A thin-wall shell subject to internal pressure and longitudinal force can be adopted as the basic computational scheme in evaluating the strength of pipelines. Analysis of the operating conditions of arterial conduits carrying petroleum products indicates that a nonstationary loading regime of internal pressure is characteristic of basic components of linear section of the pipelines. It is known that the cyclic longevity of large-diameter pipes (LDP) is determined by the magnitude of local deformations in the zone of the welded seam. Local excitation of the stress state in the welded joint of a pipe is governed by the weld reinforcement, defects in the form of undercuts and poor penetration of the seam, displacement of the edges in the seam, and angularity of shop welds, as well as out-of-roundness of the pipe section. Local excitation of the stress state is determined, above all, by stress concentration (weld reinforcement, undercut, and poor penetration), and bending effects (displacement of edges, angularity of the welded joint, and out-of-roundness of the pipe section). It is important to note that 90% of pipeline failures occur along or near the welded seam.
