Mr. J’s case and cases like it are among the mostnfrustrating problems experienced by cliniciansnin the practice of medicine today. In an environmentnwhere physicians and nurses work hard to cure and toncomfort, these situations force us to squander scarcentime and resources in pursuit of apparently meaning-nless ends. In the midst of daily routines that involvencollaborative, respectful, and productive interactionsnwith patients and families, these stalemates consumencountless hours with angry conversations, accusations,nand conflict, grinding us down and contributing tonburnout among physicians and nurses alike.nnfutility; we face a medical futility conflict.
