BMI View: China has various security challenges, both domestically and internationally. These challenges fit broadly under the categories of: national unification, maritime security, and regional and international governance. Long-running domestic issues surrounding Uighur separatism in China's western Xinjiang province, as well as Tibetan, Taiwanese and Hong Kong independence movements create a tense domestic setting, with occasional outburst of violence. Territorial disputes in the South China Sea represent China's greatest maritime concern, with China's nine-dash line encroaching on the territorial claims of multiple South East Asian neighbours. Moreover, North Korea's increasingly bellicose actions are a key source of regional instability, particularly with the American and North Korean relations cooling dramatically in recent times. China will continue to pursue a selective approach towards multilateralism in its efforts to fulfil its geo-economic goals.
