In July 1999, the original Aviation Industries of China (AVIC), with 560,000 employees, was divided into two state-owned corporations, generally known as AVIC Ⅰ and AVIC Ⅱ. In November 2008. the two were once again merged. The main focus of this new entity has been to develop indigenous military technologies to rival US manufacturers in the civilian airline industry. There are 10 business units under the AVIC umbrella: 1. Defence 2. Transport aircraft 3. Aviation engine 4. Helicopters 5. Avionics 6. General aviation aircraft 7. Aviation research and development 8. Flight testing 9. Trade and logistics 10. Asset management.
