BMI View: Investigating China's defence budget is fraught with difficulty due to the secretive nature of the country and its politics. However, accurate estimations can be made through its announced procurements. In particular China seems to be focusing on expanding and modernising its naval capacity. This is due to China having disputes with several other countries about the sovereignty of waters in the South China Sea and the islands that dwell there. China is one of the largest spenders on defence in the world and this has meant they are one of a few countries that were not hit by austerity measures.
