China's official defence budget for 2014 stands at US$133.5bn. China (and Russia)'s defence spending is now soaring ahead of many austerity-hit Western countries, with even the head of NATO publically confirming this discrepancy in spending in February 2014. This is partly from China's defence modernisation taking place simultaneously with heightened security activity regarding territorial disputes in the South East Asia region, especially at sea.
