BMI View: China is developing a range of defence technologies domestically, while importing systems that it cannot yet make itself, to a high enough standard. It is also beginning to make some headway in the export market for advanced equipment, having already secured its position as a leading supplier of defence materiel to developing countries. In the meantime, the PLA is gradually downsizing and modernizing. Currently, it fields some advanced units within a largely unmodernised force. However, as the PLA's overall size declines and more modern equipment is acquired, the ratio of advanced to basic units will continue to rise.
