Chengdu Aircraft Company (CAC) is a Chinese multinational, state-owned enterprise that manufactures aircraft components (for clients such as Boeing and Airbus) and military aircraft (mainly fighter jets). It was formed as 'State 132 factory in 1958; Chengdu Aircraft Industrial (Group) Company Limited was formed in 1998. It is currently a subsidiary of Aviation Industry Corporation of China. CAC has developed a new stealth fighter aircraft - the J-20 Black Eagle - for the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force. Its' first known test flight took place in January 2011. China's military is reportedly negotiating with Russia over orders for 117S jet engines, for use in the J-20. The US believes that the J-20 will be ready for operations by 2018, and that it is more of a long-range attack aircraft rather than a fighter jet. (Sources: Flight International/FlightGlobal, August 26 2011; and Washington Times, August 25 2011) A joint venture (JV) between Chengdu and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) began producing 16 Joint Fighter-17 (JF-17) Thunder fighters in 2006. The lightweight JF-17 is an attempt to replace the ageing Pakistani Air Force stock of Chinese-origin fighters with an aircraft put together with modern components, including Chinese avionics Italian radar (in particular a reverse-engineered version of the Raven ES-05 which is equipping the Saab JAS-39 Gripen warplane) and a Russian RD-93 engine.
