Sources of matrix-bound phosphine in advanced wastewater treatment system

Phosphine (PH_3), a highly toxic and reductive gas, has been explored in biogases and it proves also to be ubiquitous even in remote atmospheric air at a concentration in the order of (pg-ng)/m~3, For more than one hundred years, sources and mechanisms of biological phosphine formation in natural and engineered environments have been investigated and discussed. Anaerobic environments were reported to be the main source of phosphine emission. Matrix-bound phosphine, which is defined as the amount of phosphine gas liberated during acidic or caustic digestion of solids and sludge like environmental samples, has been defined by Gassmann and Glindemann. More recent studies have demonstrated that matrix-bound phosphine occurred in anaerobic digested sludge, manure, paddy field, sediment of reservoir, soils and fluvial and marine sediments. Previous research on the role of phosphine in wastewater treatment has turned attention almost only to the anaerobic digestion systems, and more than 85 percent of phosphine in anaerobic digestion systems was claimed to be matrix-bound phosphine.
