Previous immunohistochemical studies showed that the human placenta contained not only many regulatory peptides, but also 5-HT and dopamine (DA) classical neurotransmitters. These results made us suggest the following hypothesis: the human placenta might be a complex endocrine organ. In order to confirm this hypothesis, it must be understood whether these regulatory peptides and classical neurotransmitters can be produced by the human placenta, what kind of cells in placental villi produces them, andhow they regulate each other. We have demonstrated that the SS immunoreactive positive substance is contained in the cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts of human placental villi. The aims of this investigation are to study whether SSmRNA can be contained in human placenta and in what kind of cells of placental villi it is contained, and to find out some morphological evidence.
