Initiated by practical demands the research on density current was carried out in early time in such areas as hydraulic engineering, geology, navigation and environmental conservation. As a result, great achievements have been made during the past years. Previous study on density current was mainly of practical background; that is to say, the analysis of its production, motion as well as deposition was confined to empirical or experimental means, in which theoretical approach was relatively insufficient. The few theoretical methods usually dealt with simple patterns, such as flow in open channel with rectangular cross section and regular bottom, as shown in fig. 1. Such theoretical analyses and modeling are so simple that they cannot be used to illustrate deposition of density current in basin or its general motion, to say nothing of being theoretical basis for establishing mathematical model. Therefore, basic theory of density current is tentatively put forward in this note, in which 1-D and 2-D equations of treating its motion are derived from basic equations of fluid dynamics.
