These essays celebrate James Bradley, prolific student of eighteenth-centurynBritish religion and long-time professor of church history at FullernTheological Seminary. Eleven colleagues from both sides of the pond, threenof them his former students, illustrate his interests by offering papersngrouped under two broad foci: “Accommodating Religious Heterodoxy” and “Religion, Politics and Society.” Both sections help illustrate Bradley’snpushback against Jonathan Clark’s contention that religious heterodoxyndrove Dissent toward political radicalism. Against this “heresy-radicalism”nthesis, it was, rather, “social and economic injustice, combined with a morenegalitarian ecclesiastical polity” that moved religious Dissent into politicalnopposition to the Establishment (3).
