摘要

act of visual consumption in the 1800s and on. Religious imagery became massnproduced, for the church as well as for the home. Morgan goes on to illustratenhow domestic spaces would become the focal point for displaying various typesnof religious images, by both Christians and Jews living in America. Morgannalso analyses how these images would impact the formation of the Americannnational “identity,” especially with the rise of motion pictures.nIn the third part of the book, Morgan focuses on the way images carry thenpower to shape public opinion. This section illustrates how religious figuresnused charisma to become popular celebrities, and how popular media createsn“heroic” characters through charisma for viewing audiences. To conclude thisnsection, Morgan focuses on how environment and nature position viewersnwithin the landscape. This section feels cursory, however, given Morgan’snanalysis in the first two sections. Nevertheless, the number of authorsncurrently concentrating on the authority of popular filmic images makes itnprudent that Morgan remains focused on the power these images have onnthe viewer. The conclusion of the book is left lacking, in that one feelsnthat there is no true resolution or map to understanding why culturalncreations of nature are religious. And yet, at the same time, Morgannclearly illustrates that the very act of looking can be, and often is, anreligious practice.
