The development of printed circuit boards (PCBs) can be traced by looking at the evolution of rigid flex boards— starting with a simple single sided PCB going on to multilayer boards with controlled impedance, high density interconnections (HDI) and blind or buried vias. While 1974 saw the first flexible circuit made in mass production, in 1975 the first samples of rigid-flex boards were made. Only three years later, the production of a 4-layer rigid-flex PCB started in high volume (Figure 1). By 1980 250,000 pieces were made for telecom applications.
