"Build a Culture of Stopping to Fix Problems, to Get Quality Right the First Time," is Principle 5 of Jeffrey L. Liker's book The Toyota Way. "Doing it right the first time" has become such an overused mantra of American business that it has lost all meaning. Why? Because we have paid the requisite lip-service, but failed to execute. The opening quote was from a conversation between Mr. Cho and Russ Scaffede, who was the vice president of the first American powertrain plant, based in Kentucky. Mr. Scaffede has spent decades working for General Motors, where managers were judged by their ability to deliver the numbers. "Get the job done no matter what," which directly translated to "keep the line running." In this environment too much inventory was fine, not enough was a fast track to unemployment!
