Flexible circuit technology continues to grow in strength and influence. While PCB manufacturing continues to move to the Far East, the development of innovative tools for their manufacture is still alive and well— and remaining at home. Since the humble beginnings of the flex circuit industry half a century or so ago (or more than a century by the reckoning of PCB historian Dr. Ken Gilleo) there has been a slow but steady stream of innovative tools and processes developed to facilitate their manufacture. The enduring allure of flexible circuits is the sum of its many attractive features recounted here many times. Flexible circuits continue to offer virtually unlimited versatility as an interconnection medium. The technology is firmly ensconced as the premier interconnection medium for a wide variety of products from minis-cule integrated circuit packages to huge solar power generating arrays like those used on the international space station.
