General multirate building structures with application tononuniform filter banks

This paper proposes a general linear dual-rate structure fornmultirate signal processing, which encompasses the usual multiratenbuilding blocks-expanders, LTI filters, decimators, and their cascadencombinations-as special cases. Structural properties of such dual-ratensystems are studied in detail; in particular, several equivalentnimplementation structures are proposed: (1) cascade connections of anblock expander, a linear periodically time-varying system, and a blockndecimator; (2) vector sample-rate changers; and (3) cascade connectionsnof an expander, certain linear switching time-varying system, and andecimator. Using such general building blocks in multirate signalnprocessing allows more design freedom and therefore can achieve what isnotherwise impossible. This is illustrated in nonuniform multirate filternbanks. Using the general building blocks as synthesis systems, thenincompatibility for alias cancellation and structural dependencynconstraint for design, both due to fractional decimation ratios inndifferent channels, are eliminated. Hence optimal design of synthesisnsystems is possible
