The airline industry is emerging from a pronounced market downturn that began in the fall of 2008 and continued through 2009. Unlike many past industry downturns, regional carriers suffered this time nearly as much as the major airlines did. In previous market slumps, regionals were often able to expand and grow by filling gaps in service as the majors cut capacity and consolidated operations. However, the 2008-2009 downturn saw majors impose capacity cuts throughout their service networks, including on the feeder routes operated by their regional partners. With little or no opportunity for expansion elsewhere, and With cost pressures mounting, the regionals themselves were forced into retrenchment and restructuring.
