摘要

The mouth of the Hudson River was first observed in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazano, the first European to have entered Upper New York Bay. The river, however, is named for Henry Hudson who explored it in 1609 as far north as Troy while looking for the fabled Northwest Passage. Another key date in its history was 1807 when Robert Fulton's steamboat made its journey up the river from New York City to Albany. In the fall of 1825, Dewitt Clinton celebrated the opening of the Erie Canal by being towed down the river on the Seneca Chief Canal boat from Albany to New York City. By 1853 the Hudson River Railroad, located on the easterly shore of the river, was completed to Albany.
