IT is only in the last few years that governments worldwide are waking up to the value of place; of how spatial data can guide decisions. Within the UK, 2018 saw the emergence of the Geospatial Commission promising a more joined-up approach to data that would bring financial and efficiency rewards. Also in 2018, the government appointed its first head of geography. Despite making Whitehall sound like a comprehensive school, the title is not convened on a corduroy and Gore-tex wearing teacher. Its current holder is David Wood, a deputy director specialising in analysis and performance for HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
