At a joint meeting in September of the civil engineering clubs from Pearl City High School, in Pearl City, Hawaii, and Roosevelt High School, in Honolulu, the students were challenged to see which team could construct the tallest structure of spaghetti strands within 18 minutes. The structure had to be strong enough to support a large marshmallow. Aside from gaining an insight into teamwork, says Jon M. Young, P.E., LEED AP, M.ASCE, who coordinates club activities in Hawaii, the competition taught the students how to test the strength and stiffness of a material and how to impart stability to a structure.
