In plenty of old jokes, someone says something outrageous, which makes everyone wonder if God is about to strike him or her with a lightning bolt. But in Brazil, it's the towering, 38 m tall statue Cristo Re-dentor (Christ the Redeemer), which stands atop Rio de Janeiro's Mount Corcovado, that continues to be zapped by lightning. Earlier this year two direct hits within an eight-day period damaged the back of the statue's head and part of one hand. This led to an effort to repair the 83-year-old monument, according to "Arms Wide Open," a March 9 BBC News Magazine article written by Donna Bowater, Stephen Mulvey, and Tanvi Misra.
