A cleanup plan recently proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls for General Electric (GE), of Fairfield, Connecticut, to remove nearly 1 million cu yd of sediment and soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the riverbed, riverbanks, and floodplain areas along certain stretches of the Housatonic River in western Massachusetts. Expected to cost $613 million and require approximately 13 years to execute, the proposed plan would also entail capping the riverbed along various portions of the waterway, stabilizing eroding riverbanks, and monitoring to ensure that recovery occurred naturally in stretches of the river having less contamination.
