摘要

The past century has not been easy on lake sturgeon, a species that at one time was common in its U.S. range, which comprises the Great Lakes and their tributaries as well as the Mississippi River watershed. Capable of living for decades and reaching lengths of 7 ft and weights of 300 lb, the sturgeon are slow to reproduce and prefer to spawn in rocky stretches on the bottom of deep, swiftly flowing rivers, but such habitat has been largely eliminated throughout much of their range. As part of efforts to help boost lake sturgeon populations, a consortium of government and private entities has worked in recent years to restore spawning reefs. In keeping with the principles of adaptive management, the consortium members have sought to learn from earlier efforts. Lessons acquired as part of this process have informed the design of two reef restoration projects that are to be constructed this year on Michigan's St. Clair River.
