摘要

Reducing the consumption of natural resources is one of our most pressing challenges. Thus one of the most effective contributions a structural engineer can make to sustainable design is to minimize the material needed to erect the load-bearing structure of a building. A structure becomes lighter if the ratio of the structure's own weight ("self-weight") to the live loads acting on that structure becomes smaller. Not only should engineers build structures to be as light as possible; they should also devise design processes for developing efficient systems that inherently have the potential to be lighter. This is achieved by means of systems in which the geometry of the structure and the composition of the elements are chosen so that the loads are mainly carried through a combination of pure compression and tension. This concept of avoiding bending is key to the successful design of a lightweight structure.
