The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recommended new water quality standards for recreational waters that it believes states should adopt to help protect the health of beach-goers and others availing themselves of such waters. The recommendations address a broad range of illness symptoms, improved methods for accounting for pollution after a heavy rainfall, increased protection for coastal waters, and rapid testing and warning systems.
