Lake townsend encompasses 1,635 acres and is the primary water supply reservoir for the city of Greensboro, North Carolina. Built in 1967, the 45 ft high, 1,500 ft long Lake Townsend Dam consisted of more than 1,000 ft of earthen embankments flanking a gated, mass concrete spillway 276 ft long. The original operating concept for the project was to draw water from an intake structure that was built adjacent to and integral with the spillway.
