摘要

Treating contaminated water flowing from former mining sites is often a long-term proposition, mainly because eliminating the underground source of the contamination is frequently all but impossible. Therefore, relatively inexpensive, but enduring, treatment methods are important, especially when treatment sites are located in remote locations. For these reasons, passive treatment systems are gaining favor as a means of addressing unwanted discharges from certain mining sites. Research by the University of Oklahoma's Center for Restoration of Ecosystems and Watersheds has shown that such systems can work in the flatlands of Oklahoma, but they also hold promise as a treatment method in the steep mountains of Bolivia. If successful there, passive treatment systems could play a key role in developing countries that have a long history of contamination from mining operations but little means for addressing such pollution.
