The bridge in western Kentucky that carries U.S. Route 60 over the Tennessee River and links the counties of McCracken and Livingston was built in 1931. It was constructed to connect the communities of Paducah and Ledbetter, but more than eight decades of wear and tear have left it in dire need of replacement. The three-span truss bridge has been labeled structurally deficient despite "countless" repairs, according to state officials, and its load capacity was decreased early last year to the point that only cars and midsized pickup trucks can use the crossing.
