George W. G. Ferris, Jr., developed the wheel that came to bear his name as the centerpiece of the world's fair held in Chicago in 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition. Standing 264 ft tall, the wheel awed visitors, who marveled at the brilliance of its design and reveled in being able to look down on the city. Since then people of all ages have had a love affair with the Ferris wheel, and Fer-ris's design has evolved to yield such contemporary observation wheels as the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer. Now the concept is being taken to new extremes with construction of what will be the world's largest Ferris wheel upon its completion-in Las Vegas.
