At its meeting in October, ASCE's Board of Direction dealt with a variety of issues central to the civil engineering profession and ASCE members, among them how civil engineers should be educated, how the Society can best advance civil engineering technology, what public policy issues ASCE should concern itself with at the federal and state levels, and whether setting credentials for engineering technologists would benefit engineering teams. Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, October 8—9, in conjunction with the Society's 143rd Annual Civil Engineering Conference, the members of the board also surveyed the work being done by the Committee on Education, which deals not with higher education but also with education at the pre-college level. Norman D. Dennis, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, its chair, summarized the committee's efforts in the areas of accreditation, faculty development, precollege outreach, and the ASCE conference that is attended by civil engineering department heads each June.
