Located in upper New York Bay in the city of Bayonne, New Jersey, Global Terminal-operated by Global Terminal & Container Services, LLC, of Jersey City, New Jersey—is strategically positioned along the 50 ft deep Port Jersey Channel to the east of the Bayonne Bridge, which in spanning the channel known as the Kill Van Kull links Bayonne to the New York City borough of Staten Island. Because the bridge poses an impediment to large ships, Global Terminal is the only container terminal owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for which vessel size is not currently restricted by vessel air draft. Recently the terminal, which was constructed in 1972, underwent an expansion that involved a nearly 900 ft long extension to its 1,800 ft long wharf. Known as the East Berth Extension, the project was designed and constructed to provide an approximately 2,700 ft long wharf that would be capable of berthing two of the world's largest class of vessels, which have a 1,320 ft length "between perpendiculars," that is, between the main perpendicular member of the bow and the main perpendicular member of the stern. Vessels berthing at Global Terminal can have a maximum draft of 47.5 ft.
