A former asce president is helping to develop an ambitious transportation project that could see passengers traveling between cities at speeds twice those offered by most commercial airliners. Patricia D. Galloway, Ph.D., P.E., Pres.04.ASCE, this summer became one of the leaders of the Hyperloop project, a sun-powered ground transportation system that would move capsules containing 28 passengers through pressurized tubes at speeds reaching 760 mph. The concept of the Hyperloop was unveiled in August by Elon Musk, the billionaire engineer and inventor who founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SpaceX), which is based in Hawthorne, California, and cofounded the electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors, Inc., of Palo Alto, California. In its original conception, the Hyperloop would run between major cities that are less than 900 mi apart, providing an alternative to several hours of ground travel or a short-haul flight. It is estimated that the proposed route from Los Angeles to San Francisco could be built for $7.5 billion.
