In the hot. dusty climate of many Arab countries, the use of an elaborately carved lat-tice screen to cover windows is a traditional method of shading a building from the region s harsh sunlight. Known as a masbrabiya, this wooden screen both cools the interior spaces of the building and filters the amount of natu-ral light that reaches the rooms. In Abu Dhabi (Abu Zaby), one of the United Arab Emirates, a pair of 15 0 m tall office towers is adorned with a modern version of the masbrabiya that features more than 1,000 separate screens per building, each made from a roughly triangular framework of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and a dust-resistant fabric. Wrapping partially around the two towers-the north side of each building is not shielded because the sun does not shine directly there-the cantilevered mashrabiya units incorporate computer-controlled actuators and open and close in a set pattern as the sun moves across the buildings' glazed facades.
