The longest floating bridge in the world was constructed across Lake Washington between Seattle and Medina, Washington, in 1963- A commuter route linking the lake's eastern and western sides, the crossing was designed to carry 65,000 vehicles a day. Since then, however, the region's population has burgeoned, and the number of vehicles traversing the bridge each day has soared to 115,000. The population is projected to increase by another million by 2030, and the number of vehicles crossing the bridge is expected to grow to 121,000.
