As hurricaneb Sandy cut its destructive path across the eastern United States at the end of October, significant portions of the Midwest and West were experiencing moderate to exceptional drought conditions, in some cases stretching back a year or more. This imbalance reminds us once again that a warming planet-even a warming country-is not a monolith and that local effects will vary widely.
