THE FEATURE "Smart Talk," in the April issue, begins with the statement that the world's population will double in the next 30 years, to almost 12 billion. This statement is not correct according to World Population Prospects (2010 revision), published by the Popu lation Division of the United Nations' Department of Economic and Social Affairs. In 2040 the world's population is expected to be slightly less than 9 billion using the medium fertility variant. Under the high variant it is expected be under 10 billion, and under the low variant, 8 billion. Furthermore, under the medium fertility variant, which is typically used for long-range predictions, the United Nations' model never reaches 12 billion.
