Great Lakes Research Benefits from Three-Dimensional Visualizations

A PURDUE UNIVERSITY professor who specializes in environmental fluid mechanics has teamed with information technology specialists to depict hydrodynamic data from the Great Lakes in a three-dimensional (3-D) format. The resulting 3-D animations are intended to aid in understanding the data and communicating the findings not just to other scientists but also to the general public. As part of his research, Cary Troy, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the hydraulics and hydrology engineering group in Purdue's School of Civil Engineering, collects and models hydrodynamic data in order to characterize the physical processes of Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes. For example, he examines the effects of the stratification that occurs in the Great Lakes each summer as warmer water rises to the surface and colder water sinks. The resulting thermocline, or layer separating the two water zones, significantly affects circula- tion patterns in the Great Lakes during the summer. By focusing on the physical processes occurring within the lakes, Troy hopes to better understand how they affect the ecosystem of the lakes and contribute to the movement of contaminants within the water.
