IN LATE JUNE CONSTRUCTION began on the 32 mgd Water Reclamation Campus, the fourth and final component of a $660-mil-lion capital improvement program being carried out in Arizona by the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD), which provides wastewater services to approximately a million people in the Tucson metropolitan region. Prompted by regulatory requirements, in 2006 the RWRD began developing a regional master plan that calls for replacing its largest wastewater treatment facility, upgrading its second-largest treatment plant, constructing a pipeline so that wastewater can be transferred from the service area of one of the plants to the other, and standardizing and improving the process control instrumentation at the RWRD's facilities. With construction under way on the new wastewater facility, the RWRD is on track to complete the remaining elements of its plan on time and under budget.
