摘要

A 3,300 ft long structure that crosses Alaska's Tanana River southeast of Fairbanks is expected to be the longest bridge in the state when completed, in 2014. The steel plate girder structure is being constructed by the Alaska Railroad Corporation, a state-owned freight and passenger line based in Anchorage. The bridge is a key component of a four-phase project formally referred to as the Northern Rail Extension that will take the line's service approximately 80 mi to the southeast, extending it from its current terminus near the town of North Pole to the town of Delta Junction, explains Brian Lindamood, P.E., the Alaska Railroad Corporation's manager for special projects. The extension will also provide year-round vehicular and rail access to two training ranges on the south side of the Tanana River—Tanana and Don- nelly West—that are operated jointly by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. At present these areas are accessible by ground vehicles for only about two months a year via ice bridges; aircraft make all other deliveries of supplies or personnel, notes Lindamood.
