The 460,000 SQ FT West Hay-market Arena is being constructed in a historically important part of Lincoln, Nebraska, on a 130-acre site that is currently bisected by two sets of railroad tracks. Although it is expected to take a year to move the tracks, the design team used building information modeling to develop a structural solution that is making it possible for the arena to be constructed in two phases, the first of which does not depend on track removal and is already under way. The arena is the largest component of the West Haymarket Redevelopment Project, a $340-million effort by the city to revitalize approximately 400 acres of blighted and underused property along the western edge of the area encompassing Lincoln's downtown and the district referred to as the Haymarket. The city is working with the DLR Group, an architecture firm with an office in Lincoln, and with the New York City office of the engineering firm Buro Happold to design the arena.
