By the end of the year, private spacecraft will begin docking with the International Space Station (ISS). The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has granted approval for such spacecraft to begin delivering cargo to the ISS months earlier than was originally anticipated. Space Exploration Technology Corporation (SpaceX), a private firm founded by the entrepreneur Elon Musk and based in Hawthorne, California, has reported that it has received tentative approval to conduct such a mission in late November. The company will attempt to dock its spacecraft Dragon to the ISS. If all goes well, SpaceX will be awarded a $ 1.6-billion contract to begin regular cargo delivery missions for NASA in 2012. The news marks a transition for the U.S.
