When a sizable earthquake strikes, the ground shakes, buildings rattle, and sometimes entire cities move. That was the case on April 4 when a powerful temblor struck Baja California and the southwestern part of the United States. With a magnitude oil.2, the quake, according to radar images from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), caused the city of Calexico, Califor-rnnia, to move as much as 2.5 ft south and down into the ground. Called the El Mayor-Cucapah, the temblor was centered 32 mi southeast of Calexico and was the strongest one to strike the region in nearly 120 years.
