With regard to the recent discussion about the use of parentheses to insert SI (Systeme international d'unites) units into an otherwise good article, it reminds me of my experience in elementary school in 1952. The teacher would walk up and down the aisle with a ruler. When she saw a student writing with his left hand, she would whack the offending hand. Now we know that being left-handed is a natural condition (and will get you big money in baseball). The American system of measurements is better because we have various units suitable for the object to be measured: inches, feet, yards, miles, et cetera. And anyway, we are used to it and we like it. The parentheses clutter up a good article and make reading difficult. Why not print two editions, a standard American edition with only English units and a global edition with SI units?
