The seismic strengthening of Deer Creek Dam, located on the Provo River approximately 14 mi (23 km) northeast of Provo, Utah, was completed last November, almost a year ahead of schedule. Because the contractor, PnK Constructors, LLC, of Coalville, Utah, worked through a harsh winter and reused material from the site, this final phase of the three-phase project was completed in half the time expected. Given that the dam is located in a region of high seismic activity, officials decided to modify it so that it would be capable of resisting the maximum credible strength for this area: 7.5 on the Richter scale.
