The central waterfront section of Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct will be replaced with an approximately 1.7 mi (2.7 km) long bored tunnel under a plan agreed to in mid-January by the State of Washington, the City of Seattle, and King County, which contains Seattle. Envisioned as a 54 ft (16.5 m) diameter conveyance with two lanes in each direction, the tunnel will extend along Route 99 from roughly South Royal Brougham Way to Harrison Street. It is part of an approximately $4.24-billion program to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct and the city's seawall.
