Stroll down the streets of, say, downtown Annapolis, Maryland, or the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C., and at times it seems a rare find to come across a building not designated as historic. The aesthetic benefits of such historic districts seem so obvious that it is easy to believe that the decisions to create them must have been easy and quick. However, as this new edition of an authoritative work on historic preservation shows, neither is true. Historic Preservation: An Introduction to Its History, Principles, and Practice was first published in 1994 as a textbook for a college course. This revised and expanded edition maintains the broad sweep of the original while addressing such newer topics as partnerships with environmental groups and the formation of heritage areas and corridors.
