Acocoonlike structure of sprayed concrete that is eight stories tall and 65 m long is the centerpiece of a new building designed to house much of the insect and plant collection at London's Natural History Museum, including specimens collected personally by the 19th-century naturalist Charles Darwin. Scheduled to open this September, the Darwin Centre Phase II structure will link the museum's original Victorian-era Waterhouse building to the Darwin Centre Phase I building, which opened in 2002. The Darwin Centre Phase I structure houses the museum's collections that are preserved in alcohol; the new structure will store 17 million dry entomology specimens and 3 million dry botany specimens in special mobile cabinets that would stretch 7.5 km if placed end to end.
