An endless stream of horses, chickens, oxen, and Conestoga wagons passed between the intricately formed cast-iron railings of a bridge crossing Dun-lap's Creek near the Pennsylvania towns of Bridgeport and Brownsville in the mid-19th century. For many, it would be the first leg of a long journey along the Cumberland Road-or National Road-stretching to Ohio, Indiana, and beyond. The Dunlap's Creek Bridge, however, was unlike any other they would encounter along the route. Indeed, it marked a significant milestone in the history of bridge engineering, for it was the first bridge in the United States to be constructed wholly of cast iron.
